Picking up lingonberries

Sunnuntaimme oli ohjelmaa täynnä. Tyttären jalkapalloliigan loppuottelua ja sen jälkeen pientä juhlaa lähiravintolassa. Ja ihan kuin se ei olisi ollut tarpeeksi, suunnistimme vielä illan suussa koko perheen voimin lähimetsään. Puolukoita poimimaan ja kylläpä se vaan olikin mukavaa puuhaa.

Perheen pienin oli ensin hiukan ikävystyneen oloinen, kunnes hoksasi, että voi hyvin leikkiä metsässäkin - vaikkapa oksilla ja kävyillä.

Our Sunday was filled with activities. Last game of our daughters soccer league this summer and after that a little party at a local restaurant. And like that wasn't enough we went to a forest close to us to pick up some lingonberries. And boy that was fun.

Our little one was a bit bored at first until she realized that she can play in the forest too - e.g. with sticks and cones.

Meillä oli tässä mansikkapäivä. Ostimme lähimansikkatilalta pari laatikkoa tuoreita mansikoita, joista toisesta teimme survosta ja toisen laatikon marjat pakastimme kokonaisina. Eiköhän näillä taas pärjätä läpi talven. Pikkuneiti oli innokas apuri. Hienosti putsasi marjoja, vaikka raitamekko saikin hiukan uutta, punaista väriä ylleen... ;-)

We had a strawberry day. We bought two boxes of fresh strawberries from a local strawberry farm, and from the other box we smashed the berries, add some sugar and froze them and from the other we froze the strawberries as whole. I guess this will be enough for the winter. Our daughter was very eager to help. So nicely she cleaned out the berries, even though her striped dress soon got a new red colour on it... ;-)

Mustikkaa - Blueberries

Se alkaa jo olemaan mustikka-aikaa. Takapihaltamme aukeavasta metsästä kävin jo keräämässä emalimukillisen. Teimme mustikkamaitoa, tai pöppiä, niinkuin kotona oli tapana sanoa.

2 dl mustikoita
5 dl maitoa
2 rkl talkkunaa
2-3 rkl sokeria

Mustikat survotaan, lisätään talkkunasokeriseos päälle ja sekoitetaan. Lopuksi sekaan vielä kylmää maitoa.

It is almost time for blueberries. From the little forest that opens from our backyard I picked one enamel mug full of them. We did blueberry milk, or as we used to say at home pöppi.

2 dl fresh blueberries
5 dl milk
2 tbsp talkkuna (multigrain mix) flour
2-3 tbsp sugar

Crush all the fresh blueberries and add the sugar talkkuna flour mix and cold milk.


Jos haluat mustikkamaidon olevan oikein raikasta, laita se jääkaappiin ja tarjoa kylmänä. Nam!

Tänään kävimme tosi mielenkiintoisella kotikirpparilla, josta löytyi kaikkea vanhaa ja kaunista. Vanha valkoinen ikkuna ja vanha matkalaukku lähtivät muutamien muiden mielenkiintoisten löytöjen kera matkaan. Jos vain ennätän, niin koetan saada aikaiseksi niistäkin napsittua pari kuvaa. Täällä nyt touhutaan kovasti pientä vierasmajaa/leikkimökkiä, joten pitää jo taas kiitää. Mukavaa viikonloppua!

If you want the blueberry milk to be fresh, you can put it in the fridge for a while and serve it cold. Yum!

Today we went to an interesting yard sale, from where I found all sorts of old and pretty things. An old white window and an old suitcase went with me among couple of other interesting finds. If I have time I try and take some photos of my latest finds. It's just that we are building a tiny guest house/play house at the moment and it seems to take all our time. Have a nice weekend!

Makoisat marjat - All the yummy berries

Suomen kesään kuuluvat myös makoisat marjat. Ja ne kuuluvat myös meidän kesäämme, hyvin vahvasti. Mikäs sen riemuisampaa pienelle lapselle, kun poimia marjoja ihan itse, omin käsin, mahdollisesti vielä ihan ikiomaan, pieneen marjakoriin.

All the yummy berries are an important part of finnish summer. And they also belong to our summer traditions, especially picking all the fresh berries, either from the forests around us (it is okay to pick berries from any forest anytime) or strawberry fields etc. And you can imagine how special this is to a little child when she /he is able to pick berries by her/himself.

Nämä marjat ovat tosin ukin keräämiä, suomuuraimia, lakkoja tai miksi näitä nyt kukakin haluaa kutsuakaan. Mutta pikkuneitimme sai tehtäväkseen putsata näitä soiden helmiä.

These berries are picked by grandpa. These are cloudberries, very special and nowadays quite hard to find berries that grow on swamp areas only. Our little one had a special task. She was the one who cleaned these berries and put them to this a little bit sugary bowl.

Mummin mansikkapellolta on nyt jo alkanut löytymään mansikkasatoa ja joka aamu käymme tarkistamassa, mitä sieltä vihreiden lehtien alta paljastuukaan.

Grandma's strawberry fields are now filled with red and delicious strawberries and we go there every morning to check out the latest arrivals.

Pieneen koriin pienet kädet marjoja poimia saavat.

To this little basket made just for those little hands she can pick all her strawberries.

Monen monta tällaista mansikkaihanuutta onkin jo tänä kesänä massuihimme sujahtanut.

And quite many of these strawberry delights we have filled our tummies with.

Vaan yksi makoisimmista kesän marjoista on silti tässä. Metsämansikat, jotka hyvin omasta lapsuudestakin muistan. Mummilassa näitä oli kesäisin valtavat määrät ja serkkujen kanssa kilpaa niitä heinänkorsiin keräsimme. Tänä kesänä on metsämansikoita ollut todella paljon ja nyt sitten keräämme näitä kilpaa tyttären kanssa. Ja kyllä maistuvat nämä pienet, punaiset pallurat.

But one of the most delicious berries is this. Wild strawberry which grows in the forests and often times on the shoulders of all those quiet country roads. I can still remember how we used to pick these with my cousins at my grandparents farm when we were just kids. We put them to those hay straws and everyone wanted to have more than others. Now I collect these sweet little things with my daughter and enjoy every single one of them.

Mutta kyllä suurimman nautinnon näistä saa tietty lapset. Makoisat metsämansikat hukkuivat kyllä heinänkorsista alta aikayksikön. Ja mikäs siinä, sehän on tarkoituskin. Nauttia kesän maistuvista marjoista täysin rinnoin!

But who enjoyed these berries the most is her. All the yummy wild strawberries were gone in a second! And that is the idea, isn't it? To enjoy all the yummy berries of the short northern summer as much as we can!
